Open Sesame! It would be nice if you could just shout a simple passphrase on your phone and find out all its secrets. It might not be that simple, but we have some cool features for iPhone that you might not be familiar with.
There’s a lot going on in Apple’s mobile operating system, and it’s hard to know every little tip. Sometimes they are not obvious. Sometimes they are overlooked.
Check out these seven cool hidden features that will make your iPhone experience even better. They are all present in iOS 12, but you can also find them in earlier operating systems. It’s a good idea to update to the latest version of iOS 12 if your phone is compatible. Many of these features work for iPads as well, so feel free to experiment with your tablet as well!
1. Scroll up
You are in Safari and you are at the bottom of a web page, but now you want to go back to the top. You don’t need to wear your finger to scroll up. Just double-tap the bar at the top of the page, without double-tapping the URL.
This trick also works for other applications; just try pressing the top once or twice to get back to where you started. You might have to play around a bit to find the right spot.
2. Use the hidden touchpad
There is a secret touchpad hidden in your keyboard. Depending on your phone or tablet, there are several ways to access it. On many newer iPhones, you just need to press any key and you’ll see the keyboard go blank. Now you can move your finger and the cursor will move with you.
On some iPhones and iPads, you will need to hold down the space bar to access this mode. It’s a great way to move around in a document, or just hover your cursor in a specific location in an email, text, or note.
3. Put a thesaurus at your fingertips
Do you write a lot on your iPhone or iPad? You’ll never be at a loss for the right words again when you turn on Apple’s thesaurus option.
Open Settings, tap General, then tap Dictionary. Press British English Oxford Thesaurus of English. To try this out, go to Notes and type in the word “cat”. Double-tap the word and choose Search. You will now see a list of synonyms as well as the usual dictionary definitions.
4. Delete the last digit in the calculator
You don’t have to start over if you accidentally tap the wrong number in Apple’s iPhone Calculator app. Just swipe left on the calculator screen to delete the last digit. And don’t forget that you can access more advanced math functions just by turning your phone to landscape orientation.
Sorry, iPad users, you’re out of luck. Apple does not include the Calculator app with its tablet, so you can download one from the App Store.
Tap or click here to access 8 iPad apps (including a calculator) that will help you organize your life.
5. Customize the control center
Your control center probably looks pretty standard with basic controls for Wi-Fi, airplane mode, and other features right at your fingertips. But you can get even more out of it by personalizing what’s included.
Go to Settings, tap Control Center, then tap Customize Controls. Here you can remove options or add more, like screen recording or voice memos. This allows you to control your control center.
6. Block ads in games
This little trick works for some gaming apps: You can prevent the game from serving ads on the web by putting your iPhone in Airplane mode. Keep in mind that if you like a game and want to support the developer, look for a paid upgrade option that removes ads. If you’re trying out a game or find the ads too intrusive, try this Airplane mode trick.
You have options when your iPhone battery fails. Tap or click here to find out how battery replacement works.
7. Customize the vibrations
You can go all the Beach Boys on your iPhone and create some good vibes that you personalize yourself. Go to Settings and tap Sounds. Tap Vibration, then tap Create New Vibration. On this screen, tap to create your new template, and then tap Stop. You can read it to see if that’s what you want. Save it and name it to use it as a new vibrate option for your iPhone.
Have fun trying out these hidden iOS features. The touchpad will make you feel like a game changer, but even the little tricks will make your time on your iPhone easier and more convenient for you.
