Apple launches iOS 14.6 with a host of new iPhone features

Apple has just released the latest iPhone software update, called iOS 14.6. The update includes a handful of new features and prepares iPhones for upcoming upgrades to Apple Music in June.

Probably the biggest change with iOS 14.6 is the instructions for an Apple Podcasts app subscription service. Once activated, this will pay for a subscription to your favorite podcasts.

This will be activated by the podcast creators if they choose to do so, and they have control over the price to be charged. Creators can offer exclusive content to monthly subscribers, or offer ad-free podcast episodes to those who decide to pay. It will also be possible for podcast creators to offer free trials and sample episodes in an effort to gain potential customers.

Another update with iOS 14.6 is Apple Music lossless music support. Apple announced earlier this month how high-quality lossless audio will arrive on its streaming service in June at no additional cost. But there are some hardware limitations, which are discussed here, so the upgrade will only really be appreciated by subscribers with headphones and other high quality audio equipment.

An upcoming feature for more users with iOS 14.6 is Dolby Atmos music via Apple’s spatial audio technology. Apple Music subscribers will need to update their iPhone to iOS 14.6 first, then wait for Apple to activate the feature at some point in June.

AirTag users will also benefit from the update to iOS 14.6, as Apple now offers a way to add an email address to an AirTag that has been in lost mode. Previously, you could only add a phone number, which anyone who discovered the lost AirTag could see by holding it near their smartphone. With iOS 14.6, AirTag owners can display an email address instead of a phone number, if they choose.

Also new with iOS 14.6, Apple-owned Shazam is now an app clip. Identifying a song is always done by opening Control Center and pressing the Shazam button, but now instead of showing a notification that redirects you to a website, a Shazam app clip s’ opens in iOS to view song details.

Finally, for iOS 14.6, the Apple card family. A long overdue feature, this allows the owner of an Apple Card to share it with up to five people, including anyone 13 and over in your Family Sharing group. With this feature, families can track their expenses, manage their expenses and optional limits can be set for each user.
