2024 iPad models will feature hybrid OLED panels that are cheaper to manufacture and don’t give a ‘crumpled’ look

Apple will eventually switch from mini-LED to OLED technology on future iPad models, but according to the latest report, that won’t happen until 2024. However, instead of switching to flexible OLED panels, the company will apparently use hybrid OLED displays. for two advantages; reduction of manufacturing costs and improvement of quality.

LG and Samsung could be tasked with mass-producing hybrid OLED panels for 2024 iPad models

The problem with flexible OLED technology is that not only are they more expensive to produce, but they also leave a more “wrinkled” look, especially when used in larger devices. Given that the iPad Pro series potentially launching in 2024 could feature OLED panels, this “crumpled” screen appearance could put off a ton of customers after paying a premium for these tablets.

A report on The Elec says Apple intended to use hybrid OLED technology on future iPad models, and the falling manufacturing costs are just one incentive. Unfortunately, getting a vendor to mass-produce such panels could be difficult, although earlier reports have indicated that Samsung and LG should take the blame. Samsung initially refused to develop dual-stack tandem OLED panels because there was not enough financial incentive for the manufacturer, but later agreed.

Apple likely would have placed a larger order, which encouraged Samsung to continue development. However, at this stage, it is unclear whether the Korean giant showed the same enthusiasm when asked to mass-produce hybrid OLED panels. LG would also have helped Apple in this matter, but given Samsung’s resources and expertise, the latter will probably receive the bulk of the orders.

For now, Apple will continue to use mini-LED panels on the high-end iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models before moving to hybrid OLED. We’ll see what kind of improvements are coming with the new technology, so stay tuned for more updates.
